Character biography

I am an old merchant who lives in Padua and I want to marry Bianca. I think she is everything a wife should be: mild, polite and quiet, and I have enough money to take care of her. Some people may think I am too old to marry a woman as young as Bianca, but I have asked her father Baptista for her hand in marriage regardless. I will do whatever it takes to win her hand in marriage, even though I am old and not as handsome as I used to be.

The Padua Club

The Exclusive Club for Padua’s leading male citizens

Name: Gremio

Who is he?

Gremio is one of our most distinguished and mature bachelors. He is well known in the city as a well-bred and thoughtful member of the community with a high regard for tradition as can be seen in his clothes of the older fashion.

Gremio is a mature single man. He is hopeful of finding a bride as soon as he possible especially as he is wealthy and able to bring a substantial dowry to a marriage.

Interests and concerns

Gremio is a traditional member of the community. He has strong views on how people should behave especially the way in which wives should behave towards their husbands. He has no time for women who make their views known and expects them to remember their place in society as subservient to men.

Gremio is looking to marry and is hopeful that he will win the hand of Bianca the younger daughter of his neighbour, Baptista Minola. He is aware of a rival, Hortensio, another of our leading citizens but, as they are fellow members of the Padua Club, Gremio is certain that their rivalry will be conducted in the most dignified manner and there will be no unpleasantness.

Wealth and circumstances

Gremio is one of the wealthiest citizens of Padua. He has a well-appointed house in the city and will be able to draw upon his wealth to make an impressive dowry if he is successful in achieving his aim of marrying his neighbour Baptista’s daughter Bianca. Gremio feels confident that he will be able to provide a larger dowry than his rival Hortensio and so win her hand as he knows Baptista will be looking for as much money as possible.
