Character biography

I am the youngest daughter of Baptista, a wealthy merchant in Verona, and I can’t wait to get married. Unfortunately my father has said that I can’t marry until my older sister Katherina has which is a problem because she is loud, violent and harsh and scares away all the men that pursue her. I am the opposite of her and my quietness has attracted three potential husbands balled Hortensio, Gremio and Lucentio who are trying to win my hand in marriage. I spend most of my time studying music, languages and other literature, unlike Katherina who hates being told what to do.

Leading Ladies and Gentlemen – Padua’s Celebrity Magazine

Interview

LLG: In this interview we meet one of Padua’s most celebrated young ladies: Bianca Minola. Welcome Bianca, how are you?

Bianca: Hello! Yes, I am very well thank-you considering everything.

LLG: Oh dear, are there clouds on the horizon for one of the leading ladies of Padua? How can this be when you are so well placed with a father who is one of Padua’s wealthiest and most respected citizens? Do tell us all.

Bianca: Well, I don’t know where to start. Well, you see, it’s my sister.

LLG: You mean Katherina?

Bianca: Yes, Katherina though I usually call her Kate I know she gets irritated when I call her Kate, that’s why I do it. Though there are other names I could call her if I wasn’t so well brought up.

LLG: Right, we’ll call her Kate then. What is the problem? For most young ladies it is so good to have a sister to confide in and to discuss things with. Is this not the case between you and Kate?

Bianca: Well, not exactly, I think I couldn’t discuss much with her as it would end up in a blazing row. We are just so different you see. I am quite a quiet person but Kate is not. She dislikes me because she thinks I am too quiet and I won’t stand up to father and I don’t support her when she does.

LLG: What does she disagree with your father about?

Bianca: It is usually about how to behave and about getting a husband. Kate thinks women are equal and we should choose our own husbands and not have to marry someone chosen by parents. Don’t get me wrong, I think that is a good idea but it’s not going to happen is it?

LLG: Why not?

Bianca: Here in Padua, we don’t get to choose for ourselves, we are looked after by our parents and their choice is what we accept isn’t it? I’m sure father will make the best choice of a husband for me but I do hope he is someone I will like. Secretly, I do wish I could just choose someone I really like.

LLG: Is there someone then?

Bianca: Not really. My father likes Gremio, he is wealthy but he is so old and then there’s Hortensio but I’m not sure about him. Anyway, there is no point worrying about it as father has said he won’t let me be married until Kate is married and that isn’t going to happen any time soon!

LLG: No? Don’t you think she’ll be married soon?

Bianca: What? Kate? Everyone knows she’s a shrew. No man can cope with her because she is always so angry and thinks they are silly or stupid. I’m just going to have to wait until she is married and then hope father finds me someone I like. I do wish it wasn’t like this and I could simply make my own choices.

LLG: Thank-you Bianca for being so open and honest with our readers. I am sure we all hope everything works out for you.
